HDTV vs EDTV - What Is The Difference?
HDTV or EDTV? What is the different between this two? The
continuous rise of our technology sometimes creates confusion among the ordinary
people who has only limited knowledge about the field.
High-Definition Television (HDTV) refers to the broadcast of
television signals with a higher resolution than the traditional formats allow.
It is broadcast digitally thus, it introduction sometimes coincides with the
introduction of digital television.
In the context of HDTV, the format of the broadcast are being used to describe
the number of lines in the display resolution, the progressive frames or
interlaced film and the number of frames or fields per second. HDTV has at least
twice their resolution therefore allowing much more detail to be shown compared
to analog television or the regular DVD.
EDTV, on the other hand, which stands for Enhanced Definition Television, does
not sound much compared to HDTV but it is in fact a major step forward in
picture quality.
EDTV had become as a solution to eliminate the interlacing system that it had
replaced. Interlacing was originally invented to save transmission bandwidth in
view of the fact that with an interlaced signal one only need top send half the
frame at a time. However, as we already have media such as the DVD from which we
can read and transmit picture information a bit faster than ever before leaving
no reason for interlaced format to stay any longer. This is the concept of the
manufacturers when they thought about EDTV.
With the introduction of this “a leap forward” technology, we need not disregard
the fact that HDTV had been a helpful tool too, and is being utilized by a
number of modernized institutions like the broadcast industry.
The industry is struggling toward the conversion of the present system to High
Definition Television, which is most probably will be complete in another half a
decade. The system is quite agreeable because it increases the number of scan
lines on the screen and widens the aspect ratio of the screen from the standard
which is what most of the televisions are today. This wide screen format
provides amore theatrical look.
Whatever it is that makes HDTV favorable, it should always be noted that it does
have both very good formats that would provide a better viewing for us. With
this fact, still there are numerous others who are ready to spend a great deal
of money just to make the quality of the picture be the best possible among its
kind and acceptable to the mass market.
Finally, video transfer quality on DVDs has improved long before HDTV’s were
introduced. Nevertheless, it is just practically the same as saying that even
without HDTV larger screen projectors will continue to look amazingly good.
